ABOUT IELTS AND OET

IELTS: International English Language Testing Exam


IELTS is a English proficiency test which also tests the Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking abilities of test taker. A minimum of 7.5 IELTS band overall and 7 in each subset is required and its scores are valid for 2 years.


The IELTS can be the UKVI or non-UKVI version. It must be the Academic IELTS.


If you reach a score of 7.5 overall, and a minimum of 7.0 in all sections, you can use it for:


  • PLAB
  • GMC registration
  • Tier 2 Work visa
  • Non-training jobs
  • Training jobs after FY2 level (CT1/ST1 and beyond)
  • Widening Access to Specialty Training (WAST)


A score of 7.5 in ALL sections is required for:


  • FY1 through the UK Foundation Programme
  • Direct entry to standalone FY2


OET: Occupational English Test


OET is designed purely for doctors and other health professionals. The reading and listening tasks will be health related (although may include tasks relating to nursing or other healthcare professionals). The speaking and writing are profession-specific. OET scores are evaluated on a grade scale of “A to E” and most of the universities ask for grade B, these scores are valid for 2 years.


If you reach a minimum score of 350 or grade B in all sections, you can use it for:


  • PLAB
  • GMC registration
  • Tier 2 visa
  • Non-training jobs
  • Training jobs after FY2 level (CT1/ST1 and beyond)
  • Widening Access to Specialty Training (WAST)

If you reach a minimum score of 400 in all sections, you can use it for:

  • Direct entry to Standalone  through the UK Foundation Programme
